Steve Martin seeks
Shelby School Board re-election

Steve Martin of north Shelby County is seeking his fourth term as a member of the Shelby County School Board (Place 2). A republican, the 59 year old real estate agent has been a resident of Shelby County since 1985. Martin has been elected by the board to serve as its vice president for nine years.

“I have worked supporting our schools since the day I moved to Shelby County. Since serving on the board, I have seen our school system grow from some 12,000 students and around 20 schools, to the top county school system in Alabama with more than 25,000 students and some 36 schools.” Martin said.

“Our school board has been praised by many educational professionals and community and state leaders as being one that works professionally, works as a team, has a logical approach to solving problems and is extremely fiscally responsible,” Martin said.

A few of Martin’s accomplishment as a board member have included:
. Working to change banking practices which have been responsible for millions to the school system gained in interest on deposits.
. Initiating policies and procedures that benefit the security of county schools, campuses, and students.
. Fighting to protect classroom instructional time from outside interferences.
. Recognizing the needs and desires and being an advocate for all specific communities, such as protecting the Vincent community’s desire to keep its alternative calendar.
. Introducing a policy that all no-bid contracts come before the board.
. Reinstating Christmas holidays on the school calendar instead of calling them Winter Holidays.

Recognized as an All-State School Board member in 2004, Martin has been active in working with the Alabama Association of School Boards in its efforts to assist and to protect state programs for public schools. On the state level he has been an advocate of protecting public school funds from quasi-educational organizations and bringing Alabama in line nationally with number of required student attendance days.

Martin cites his experience and desire to continue Shelby County Schools’ positive path. He said that if the two incumbent board members were replaced, the school system would be gaining an elected superintendent with no experience in that office, and that the veteran school board member would be Peg Hill with only three years experience on the board. He said the current board works as a team, and he feels that strength is another reason for voters to re-elect him.

He is married to Linda Martin, a classroom teacher for more than 30 years. She is currently chairman of the English Department and Advanced Placement Senior English teacher at Oak Mountain High School. She has also taught at Montevallo Middle, Vincent High and Pelham High schools. They have two grown daughters, Stephanie and Melinda, who both were educated in Shelby County schools.

Martin holds a B.S. Degree from The University of Alabama, and an Alabama Real Estate license. He is an agent with Access Realty that opened an office on Valleydale Road in north Shelby County on May 1. His professional background includes working in communications at the University of West Alabama, health care and owning and operating a community newspaper. In 2002 he co-authored and published “The Shelby County Scene,” a book on Shelby County.
