Annual Awards
The volunteers of the Chelsea Citizen Observer Patrol were treated to a delicious dinner at Liberty Baptist Church in Chelsea on February 28, 2006. This was our seventh annual awards and recognition meeting, hosted by Mayor Earl Niven. Bill Weldon and Pat McDanal coordinated the program, which included guest speaker Presidential Appointee U.S. Marshall C. Martin Keeley. Guests included Sheriff Chris Curry and several on his staff, representatives from the Montgomery Police Department and Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), the Chelsea City Council, and Chief Wayne Shirley and the staff of the Chelsea Fire Department
The Volunteer of the Year award went to Sallie Williams. Sallie is a wonderful representative of this program as she gives freely of her patrol hours and has great leadership and training skills. Donald Shirley, Mavis Efferson, Russ Thuleen, and Bryan Weldon received special recognition for outstanding service to the City of Chelsea.
The C.O.P. program is an all-volunteer organization devoted to keeping a watchful eye on the City of Chelsea. This program is supported by the City of Chelsea and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. We currently have about thirty active members. We all try to give at least three hours a week and attend a meeting once a month. If you are interested in this program, please contact Bill Weldon at 965-5980, 678-6588, or Pat McDanal at 678-0258.
