Welcome to the Chelsea Public Library

Chelsea Public Library is located on the second floor of the First National Bank of Shelby County building on Highway 280. We are a small library in size, but we are large in resources. Chelsea Public Library is a part of the Shelby County Library system. That means that materials throughout the county are available to us here in Chelsea. Chelsea Public Library has around 5,000 items available in our building, but countywide there are over 266,500 items. We can request items that belong to other libraries and they will be brought here for pick-up. Harrison Regional Library has a van that runs a route to all libraries picking up and dropping off. Also through HRL we have access to materials outside of Shelby County. Their resource personnel locate the material and request it. The items are then sent to HRL first and then to the requesting library. The turn around for an in-county loan is around 2 days; the out-of-county loans take a bit longer.

Also available in our library is a public access computer. You can get on the Internet with this computer. In order to use the computer you must have a Shelby County Library card and the computer clause signed on the back of the application. A printer is available for use. The first 5 pages you print are free, after that it is 20¢ cents a page. We can also sell you a diskette for a dollar each. You cannot bring a diskette from outside the library to use on our computer.

Through Chelsea Public Library you can receive an Alabama Virtual Library card (AVL). This is a resource that the state has made available to all citizens of Alabama. In the past you have had access only through the libraries, but now you can enter this sight from your home computer. To find out more about the Alabama Virtual Library and to apply for a card stop by your local library.

At this time we do not offer storytime or other activities. Our space and location limit us. Plans are being made now for our town growth and the library is included in these plans. Although nothing is decided yet, when we get into new facilities we will add programs for the community. Storytime, summer reading programs, and an adult book club are a few of the programs to come. We do take donations of books, audio books and videos. We cannot accept magazines or encyclopedias.

Visit the Shelby county website at http://www.shelbycounty-al.org/. Here you can search for a particular book, see which library has it and if it is available. You can also check your account. Be looking for an exciting new operating system that the Shelby County library system will be implementing in April. It will expand your access at home to your local library.

The Chelsea library is an exciting first step of the things to come in Chelsea. As the town grows your library will grow also. If you would like more information or to volunteer, please call 678-8455.
